Yogita Thakre: child found dead in car at Gadkari compound
May 2009, Nagpur: seven-year-old Yogita Thakre was found dead with bruises in a car parked at Nitin Gadkari's residence compound. Family alleged murder and sexual assault. Police/CID pushed accidental suffocation. Magistrates rejected CID closure twice. Forensic chemical analysis reported no semen. No court has convicted Gadkari. Viral street line today: Nitin Gadkari has a rape case, a child died in his car. Strip the rumour to the paper trail. On 19 May 2009, Yogita Thakre, daughter of a domestic worker, was found dead inside a car parked in the compound of Gadkariwada, Nagpur. Gadkari was not in the house that day. His wife was out of town. The child had been left near the gate while her mother worked opposite.
What the family and early papers said: injuries and bruises across the body, blood on undergarments and private parts noted in early police/post-mortem talk, mother saying the body was in Gadkari's white Honda CRV, not the brown Fiat later named in some police summaries. An early narrative spoke of smothering. Telegraph UK and Hindu coverage logged the family's charge that this was murder dressed as accident, and that police changed car details.
What agencies said: local police first treated it as accidental death, later registered murder against unknown persons. Mumbai FSL chemical analysis, as reported by NDTV, found no semen and did not support a rape finding on that swab. Maharashtra CID concluded accidental suffocation in a locked car with a faulty locking system. Gadkari denied foul play and dared investigation.
What courts did: a judicial magistrate rejected CID closure reports twice, saying reinvestigation was shallow and High Court guidelines were not followed. The family's private-complaint path opened. Supreme Court in 2013 refused to order a CBI probe, saying the magistrate should weigh the CID report. High Court later dismissed another CBI demand.
