How to file an RTI (simple steps)

Use the Right to Information Act to ask for status, delay reasons, and records.

Who this is for

Anyone whose file is stuck, or who needs official answers in writing.

Real life (simple)

  • Your caste certificate is “pending” for 3 months. The clerk says come next week. On paper, nobody is responsible.
  • Real-life move: file RTI asking (1) current status of application number, (2) name of officer holding the file, (3) reason for delay. Keep the RTI receipt. Silence becomes harder.

What to do (step by step)

  1. Write 4–8 clear questions. Ask for dates, names of officers, and copies of notes.
  2. For Central departments, file at RTI Online. For state, use your state RTI portal or post.
  3. Pay the fee as shown on the portal (keep receipt).
  4. Save the registration number.
  5. If no reply in time, file First Appeal.
  6. If still ignored, go for Second Appeal / State Information Commission path.

Tips

  • Ask for information, not arguments. Example: "Provide the current status of application number X."
  • Keep questions short and numbered.

Warnings

  • RTI is powerful, but use polite and precise language.
