Manipur: ethnic violence, women assaulted, justice delayed
May 2023 ethnic violence killed hundreds and displaced thousands. A viral video of women paraded naked forced Supreme Court suo motu action. Years later trials crawl, accused get bail on delay grounds, and people still protest for justice. State failure on camera.
Manipur burned in May 2023 after the Tribal Solidarity March and Meitei ST-status fight. Official tallies put deaths above 260. Tens of thousands became IDPs. Homes, churches, and villages went up. This is not a WhatsApp rumour. It is a national wound.
July 2023: a viral video showed women sexually assaulted and paraded naked. The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance. The Chief Justice said using women as instruments of violence is unacceptable. CBI got cases. Trials for heinous offences were shifted toward Guwahati for safety. A Justice Gita Mittal committee watched relief.
Years later, justice still limps. Supreme Court benches keep asking CBI for status reports, ordering chargesheets shared with victims, and saying trials must be expedited. Legal-aid lawyers who know Manipuri were still being demanded in 2025-26. In one high-profile sexual-violence track, accused got bail after long custody while charges were not framed. Victims' lawyers called that delay itself a second crime.
On the ground, protests never really ended. Candle marches, women-led sit-ins, marches to the CM bungalow, hunger strikes, and IDP letters to Delhi keep asking the same question: where is justice? Internet cuts earlier in the conflict drew rights-group fire under Anuradha Bhasin standards.
Street talk blames Union indifference and a late Prime Minister visit. Government cites complex ethnic conflict and SoO / armed-group politics. Trishola sticks to court record, the assault video heat, delayed trials, and the fact that survivors still wait. A republic that needs a viral clip to notice naked women is already late.
