KR Ramesh Kumar: 'enjoy rape' remark in Assembly
December 2021: Karnataka Congress MLA and former Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar said in the Assembly, 'when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it.' Video shows laughter in the House. He later apologised. The clip keeps resurfacing because a lawmaker joked about rape on camera.
This is not street rumour. It is on Assembly video. December 2021, Belagavi session. During a farmers' debate, Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said he could not control the House and might as well 'enjoy the situation.' Congress MLA KR Ramesh Kumar, a former Speaker himself, answered: there is a saying that when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That is exactly the Speaker's position. The House laughed. NDTV, Indian Express, TOI, and Scroll carried it.
Next day he apologised on X and then on the floor, calling it an off-the-cuff remark. Apology does not erase the tape. Rape is not a punchline for crowded House business. Women who fight real cases heard a senior lawmaker treat their trauma as a joke while colleagues chuckled.
Party label does not matter here. Congress MLA. BJP Speaker laughing in the clip. Both sides failed basic dignity. Trishola logs it because public memory is short and recycled videos need a sourced page, not a rumour caption.
What citizens can do when such clips return: save the news links, not cropped hate edits. Demand apology plus conduct rules in Assembly. Support survivors through NCW / women police stations, not pile-on theatre. Do not share the remark as a meme.
