Police not registering an FIR

When the police station refuses to write your complaint as an FIR.

Who this is for

Victims whose complaint is being refused or delayed at the thana.

Real life (simple)

  • Police say “compromise outside, we will not write FIR”. Your complaint is about a cognisable offence.
  • Real-life move: give a written complaint and take a received copy if possible. If refused, go to the senior officer with the same paper. Keep dates. Stay peaceful.

What to do (step by step)

  1. Give a written complaint. Keep a copy with received stamp if possible.
  2. Ask clearly for FIR registration and the FIR number.
  3. If refused, go to a senior officer (ACP/DCP/SP) with the same written complaint.
  4. You can send the complaint by registered post to the SP / Commissioner.
  5. Use state police grievance portals and CPGRAMS.
  6. For many offences, you may also approach the Magistrate with a complaint (take local legal help if needed).

Tips

  • Write facts in order: date, place, what happened, who did what.
  • Zero FIR can be registered even if the crime place is another area : ask for it when relevant.

Warnings

  • If you are in immediate danger, call emergency help first.
